Talk about a cherry guitar! In the store this week comes a vintage 1979 Gibson ES-335TD in Cherry finish. Beautiful sounding semi-hollow body with all the character that comes with a 70’s Gibson. This one plays as good as it looks!
It features a bound semi-hollow maple body, a mahogany neck with 22-fret bound rosewood fingerboard, two “Patent Number” pickups, and a coiltap switch. Guitar shows scratching, small dings, and finish wear typical of a vintage piece. No major damage or defects, original hardshell case.
The 335 line is definitely a shop favorite, and the older the better. This ’79 ES-335TD has one of the nicer finishes we have seen with the wood grain popping through the trans red. You gotta check this one out, but in case you miss it here is a video of James Comparato making it sing…
Like I said, you gotta check this one out!
We seem to be getting cooler and cooler gear in lately, and this one is high on the list. Nothing like hearing some guitar history. Here is more info on the ES-335 from Gibson.com…
“The Gibson ES-335 (and the closely-related ES-345 and ES-355) remains a special instrument in guitar history. They are acknowledged as the first ‘semi-acoustic’ electrics ever made, and have been in constant production since 1958. The design and sounds they offer confirm their position as one of the most versatile guitars ever made.
Need a quick 101 on Gibson ES-335s facts and why they are so special? Of course you do! Let’s go…
1. The ‘ES’ denotes ‘Electric Spanish’. Yup, back in 1957 when the guitar was designed Gibson needed to differentiate this design to the ‘EH’ line of lap steels, which stood for ‘Electric Hawaiian’. Lap steel guitars were still popular back in the late ‘50s.”
