Artist Series Instruments

January 22, 2024 by MGRSTL

When we buy, learn, and play an instrument – we are artists – yes? So, it is our contention that we should gain a bit of the accolades of being one who creates ‘art’. Yay for all of us. The satisfaction of the craft is enough for most of us.

There is a select group of ‘artists’, however, who have changed pop culture. Those who have trail-blazed styles and musical direction. Those whose names have become as common knowledge to us as presidents, moms, and best friends.

These artists get special treatment from manufactures. Sure, they get free gear and all – but some get extra special treatment to the extent that an instrument is named for them– and called a Signature, or an Artist Series, etc. Some are designed, some are replicas of famous instruments they have wielded. It’s a very big honor.

And yes, we know this is for the manufacturer to leverage the name, fame, and accomplishments into sales – but – that’s OK. Because we revere those artists. Many of them make our lives better. And often, the instruments they wield offer insight into that artist’s preferences, character, and sometimes provide features not found on other instruments.

This is most apparent in the guitar market:
Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, John Mayer, Robert Cray, Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy, Alex Lifeson, George Lynch, Warren Demartini, Jake E. Lee, Randy Rhoads… This list runs forever…

Special paint jobs, unique circuitry, varied neck carves, preferential frets – again, a long list of nifty variances and looks that make these instruments different, cool, and often collectible.

Often these artist series instruments grace our wall here at Music Go Round St. Louis. They don’t often stick around long. Fans abound – fans partake!

Take a look through our guitar list often, because you may see an appearance by one of your favorite players axes hanging around – just waiting to come home with you to bring a small part of that magic.

(At the time of this posting Eric Clapton just left the building, but Robert Cray is here – as is Randy Rhoads and Carlos Santana! – Don’t snooze!)

Solid State Guitar Amplifiers

So I’m gonna confess something first and foremost: I’m a tube snob. I love the glass. I love the dynamic push and pull you get from having valves in an amplifier. Valves/tubes/glass – bottles of tone… BUT – let’s talk briefly about Solid State Amplifiers… They have their place. And in many cases – they […]

Ace.

Ace. Yeah, normally we talk about gear. And there will be hints of that here because we, nor he, could do what we/he do/did without the stuff. But. Let’s talk Ace. The Les Paul and Marshall pounding dynamo who has left for space. His home. Jendell in the Klaatu solar system. He wasn’t the most […]

People Pay for That? “Relic’d”

We are talking about “Relic’d” gear. If you are new the game – “relic’ing” a piece of gear means to ‘beat it up’ intentionally. In the best possible way. Usually, the purpose is to make it look ‘old’. The preferred terms thrown around are ‘vintage’, “patina”, “well-played”, etc. Now, why on Earth would anyone pay […]

Phil X at Music Go Round St. Louis

When Phil X Came to Town

Phil X. Theofilos Xenidis.BEAST. YouTube legend.Triumph, Bon Jovi, Hired Gun The dude seemed to be a well-kept secret for a couple of decades. Kicking around the California camps the Canadian born rocker did stints with Triumph and Randy Coven (Aldo Nova) before settling in to session work. Then came YouTube and Fretted Americana – a […]
