Is The Violin The Right Instrument For You? The Pros & Cons

May 27, 2021 by MGRSTL

The violin is a beautiful instrument that is fulfilling to learn and master. Just like any instrument, there are mental and physical benefits to playing the violin—but is it right for you?

Here is what you should know about the violin and if it is the right instrument for you.

used instrumentsThe Violin Takes A Long Time To Learn

While it takes a lot of time and practice to learn any instrument, the violin is known for being particularly challenging. But that doesn’t mean you should let that deter you! It is a very rewarding instrument

Like any instrument, you must be committed to learning. Even professional violinists spend a lot of their time practicing and improving.

The Violin Is A Versatile Instrument

One of the great things about the violin is that it can fit in anywhere, in any music genre—classical, jazz, and even rock and roll. Once you have overcome its initial challenges, you will find that you can adapt the violin to your playing style.

The Violin Is A Very Physical Instrument

Playing the violin can be physically challenging. It requires many different skills such as strength, dexterity, and muscle memory. You will need the physical strength required to carry out proper bowing techniques and knowing where to place your fingers on the strings. Your violin teacher will give you exercises to do each day in order to build this strength.

It’s Ok If You’re Not The Best At First

No one started out playing the violin perfectly. In the beginning, you may feel discouraged or silly. But once you get the hang of it and keep practicing, you will become comfortable and the positions will feel more natural. If you find yourself lacking motivation, find a group in your area you can practice with. Group practices are great to keep yourself motivated and responsible.

44 years today. Unbelievable. That’s how long it’s been since the great Randy Rhoads was taken from this world so abruptly. His influence from just a few albums and a handful of live recordings is immeasurable. And, his influence on the gear we still buy is astounding. Jackson guitars only exist because of Randy Rhoads. […]

What Riff You Gonna Hear?

What Song Are You Gonna Hear At MGR STL?

Wayne’s World started a trend – a forbidden song trend – led by the all-time forbidden #1: Stairway to Heaven. Our opinion is if you can play that beauty – have at it. Masterpiece; always and forever! And, of course there are more on the ‘traditional’ ‘forbidden’ list: Sweet Child O’Mine, Smoke on the Water, […]

Fender Custom Shop

Top Shelf

At our ‘old’ store we had the Red Wall. It was where the cool high-end guitars and basses liked to hang out. It was a glorious attraction. Beautiful select gear framed in crimson for all to see and touch. At our ‘new’ shop we have lots more room. We have lots more inventory. So, we […]

Solid State Guitar Amplifiers

So I’m gonna confess something first and foremost: I’m a tube snob. I love the glass. I love the dynamic push and pull you get from having valves in an amplifier. Valves/tubes/glass – bottles of tone… BUT – let’s talk briefly about Solid State Amplifiers… They have their place. And in many cases – they […]
